For the past four decades Joppa Shriners have spread goodwill and fellowship across the Gulf Coast. The Shriners are a philanthropic organization that operates 22 children’s hospitals across the United States and world. Shriners Hospitals for Children provides expert, family centered care at no charge. Children under the age of 18 are eligible for treatment of orthopedic problems, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate regardless of parents ability to pay.
Our main contribution is transporting children to and from their appointments. Most of the patients from the coastal area go to Shreveport Hospital, but we also send children to Galveston, Houston, Lexington, Tampa, Cincinnati and Philadelphia.
Masons looking to enhance the fellowship they enjoyed with their brethren founded Shriners International in the late 1800’s. We continue to do that today, and are very family oriented. We host a monthly Steak Night, participate in Veterans Day and Mardi Gras Parades, and volunteer with other organizations, such as the Gulf Coast Symphony.
The theme for Joppa in 2017 was coined by our Potentate, Mark A. Hopkins—“We Support our Children…No Child Left Behind”.
